La Respiration des Pierres
2009
Hand-drawn animation, black ink on paper
Duration : 1 min 30
La Respiration des Pierres is a hand-drawn animation created through a repetitive tracing process.
Starting from an initial ink drawing of a stone, the image was manually copied again and again using a lightbox, each drawing tracing the previous one. Through this process, micro-variations and involuntary deviations accumulated. Repeated over time, these small errors progressively altered the original form.
What began as the representation of an inert object gradually produced the illusion of movement. The stone appears to vibrate, expand, and contract, as if animated by a slow internal breath.
The work emerges from the accumulation of these minimal shifts. Movement is not drawn intentionally, but generated by the repetition of the same gesture and the instability inherent to manual reproduction.
Completed in 2009, this project marks an early and foundational moment in the development of my process-based practice, introducing repetition, duration, and transformation through sustained attention.
